Disaster Legal Services Volunteers Needed at WNC FEMA Centers
NCBA Young Lawyers Division is organizing Disaster Legal Services (DLS) pro bono attorney volunteers to help staff legal support tables in-person at FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) throughout WNC. Attorney volunteers must be NC-licensed in good standing (or otherwise qualified to practice law in NC). DLS volunteers must be able to commute to their chosen DRC location and preferably able commit to a recurring staffing schedule. Full day, part day, and weekend volunteer shifts are available. Volunteers can sign up here.
DLS attorney volunteers on-site at the FEMA DRCs will engage directly with disaster survivors to provide disaster-related legal information and resources, as well as identify and educate survivors on disaster legal issues including FEMA eligibility, claims and appeals, insurance claims/disputes, tenant rights/housing/habitability matters, and consumer protection/contractor issues. When able, attorney volunteers may provide brief advice and counsel to those who come to the DLS table to ask a legal question. DLS attorney volunteer training manuals and videos are available.
**Attorney volunteers should not just show up unannounced to FEMA DRC locations. For reasons of security, volunteer staffing assignments should be scheduled through the NC DLS program, which is coordinating with FEMA and other national and state partners.**

Check out this Podcast: The Benefits of Professionalizing Pro Bono
Listen to (or read) experts discuss the professionalization of pro bono legal services on Talk Justice.
Pro bono work is often thought of as a side project that lawyers perform, but legal aid organizations that can rely on full-time staff have increased opportunities to expand services and provide more intensive client service through pro bono.
A growing number of people and firms are making pro bono their full-time occupations and bringing professionalism to this area of legal practice.
